Maidy & Nathaly
In 2002, Nathaly was referred to the Buddy Program by her kindergarten teacher as she was shy, withdrawn and part of a very large family. She was matched with a Big Buddy, Maidy, who had a lot of energy and time to give to Nathaly and they remained matched for 8 years. The Buddy Program also helped with many other support services, including referrals to other agencies for medical and dental support and a program that provides support to families over the holidays.
When she entered high school Nathaly decided to become a Big Buddy herself through the Peer-to-Peer Program. For three years she mentored a little girl and paid her experience forward; she was able to help this little girl make the transition between elementary to middle school – a constant friend and companion.
Upon graduating from High School, the Buddy Program awarded Nathaly a scholarship from the Buddy Program for her continuing education at University of Northern Colorado where she wanted to pursue a degree in education. As the first generation of children in her family to attend college, the Buddy Program’s scholarship committee was impressed by her goals and commitment to higher education! Maidy wrote in Nathaly’s graduation card, “I will always be there for you, I will always listen to you, and I will always be cheering you on to be the very best that you can be.”
