Jack and Josue are a Buddy Pair in the Community Program in Carbondale. Jack is retired and wanted to volunteer to give back to his community. He wanted to volunteer within the Buddy Program because he enjoys the interactions with children. Josue is now a 6th grader in Carbondale Middle school. He wanted to have a Big Buddy to have fun, to be active and to be healthy.
Jack and Josue were paired in May, 2013 and since then Josue’s world in the community has opened up incredibly. He has experienced and participated in many activities that he had never tried before. Jack is very active and always tries to find new things to do with Josue. Some of the things they have done together are: hiking to Thomas lakes, bike riding, going to the Glenwood Caverns, Rock Bottom Ranch, Roaring fork Conservancy River Festival, Buddy Challenge Day at the Deaf camp and many more.
Since they have been matched, Josue is more active in the community and is more involved with after school activities. He participated in Junior Golf at River Valley Ranch for two summers. He also signed up for the Second Shift program through Access Roaring Fork and he just got a scholarship with the Buddy Program to do Basketball through the Carbondale Rec Center this winter.
Josue is also doing better at school and he received good remarks from his teachers on all subjects. He is excelling in math and his band teacher was very complimentary about his trumpet play. Josue told Jack recently that it was the best report he has ever gotten.
Josue’s mom, Eliza is very appreciative and grateful that Josue has a mentor like Jack in his life and she relays: “Jack is such a huge support for Josue and I’m so grateful he is in Josue’s life”.
